OPENING REMARKS

H.E. Ignasius Jonan

Indonesian Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources

H.E. Ignasius Jonan is the Indonesian Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources serving under President Joko Widodo periode. He was the Indonesian Minister of Transportation from 2014 to 2019 and President Director of the Indonesian government-owned railway company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT. KAI, Persero), from 2009 to 2014. Jonan received his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Airlangga University, Surabaya in 1986. He gained his master degree in International Relations and Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University in 2005. He started his professional career in the banking sector, holding a managing director role in the American banking and financial services corporation, Citigroup, before entering the public transportation sector in 2009.

Prof. Dr. Boediono, M.Ec

Vice President of Indonesia from 2009 to 2014, Professor at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta

Prof. Boediono was the Vice President of Indonesia from 2009 to 2014. His career began at Bank Indonesia and further hold prominent positions in the government as the Minister of National Development Planning (1998-1999), the Finance Minister (2001-2004) and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs (2005-2008). He began his university study at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta before winning a scholarship to study economics at the University of Western Australia (UWA). After finishing his undergraduate program, he later pursued a master degree in economics at Monash University (Australia). He then continued and received a doctorate degree in economics from the Wharton School, The University of Pennsylvania (USA). He wrote many papers for economic journals and books on the topic of Indonesian economic. He is also a professor of economics at Gadjah Mada University where he has taught various courses on macroeconomics and monetary policy.

Prof. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana (Panelist)

Director, Center for Sustainable Development Goals Studies, Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia

Prof. Armida Alisjahbana  is a professor of economics, Director for Center for Sustainable Development Goals Studies, Universitas Padjadjaran, and Member Indonesian Academy of Sciences. Concurrently she is an independent commissioner of PT Bank CIMB Niaga, Indonesia. She was Minister for National Development Planning / Head of BAPPENAS during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration (2009-2014).  She served as Co-chair of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation during 2012-2014, Alternate Governor of World Bank and ADB for Indonesia during 2009-2014. Recently, Professor Alisjahbana has been appointed as Member of the Independent Team of Advisors on SDGs to the UN ECOSOC in 2016. Prof. Alisjahbana holds International Advisory Board positions in the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies (BIES) published by ANU, Canberra. She has published widely and holds various advisory board position, among others in ERIA and Indonesian Chamber of Commerce. Her research interests are in the area of Sustainable Development, Education and Labor Economics.

Prof. Akiko Yamanako (Panelist)

Senior Diplomatic Fellow at Central Asia Forum Cambridge University, Former Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japanese Government and former Special Ambassador for Peacebuilding of Japan

She has been active in both academia and the political arena. She serves as the Special Ambassador for the World Tsunami Awareness Day of Japan, Special Advisor to the President of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Research Advisor at Institute for International Policy Studies (IIPS), Senior Visiting Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs ( JIIA) and Visiting Professor at Tenjin Foreign Studies University in China. She pursued her academic career as Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge, the United Nation University, Graduate School of Hokkaido University and Senior Researcher at the University of Oxford and Harvard University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies( CSIS ) and Brookings Institute in Washington DC in USA.  She has served as a member of the Japanese Diet as well as Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs. Other posts in the Diet have included Director of the Committee of Foreign Affairs, Acting Director of the Defence Committee and Director General of the Women’s Bureau of the LDP and she launched “The Human Resources Development Program in Asia for Peacebuilding” as Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Her expertise is Non-Traditional Security includes International Peacebuilding, International Negotiation and Strategic Studies, Sustainable water, foods, energy and environment on which she has written and gives lectures extensively. She has published many books such as “Think, or Sink: Preventive State Theory”. She was awarded OISCA Award (for Contributions to Asia) and the International Soroptimist Japan’s Sen Kayoko Prize (for Contributions to International Understanding)”

Andrew Shaw (Panelist)

Economic Counselor, U.S. Embassy Jakarta

Andrew Shaw is the Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.  In this role, he coordinates all aspects of U.S.-Indonesia economic and commercial policy.  Andrew is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service and has served in Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Amman, Jordan.  As head of the Economic-Political Section at the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong from 2012-2016, Andrew helped promote U.S. commerce and job growth through negotiations, advocacy, American Chamber of Commerce outreach activities, and policy briefings.  In Washington DC, Andrew served as Special Assistant to former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and to former Undersecretary for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns, as well as Thailand Desk Officer at the start of U.S.-Thailand free trade negotiations. Andrew is a graduate of Princeton University where he received his undergraduate degree in political-economy and his master’s degree in public policy.  He speaks Indonesian, Mandarin Chinese, and Thai.  He served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in southern Thailand from 1987-1989.  He is married with three children.

Dr. Arif Havas Oegroseno (Moderator)

Deputy Minister of the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia

Dr. Oegroseno (S.H., LL.M.) is currently Deputy Minister of the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. He was the President of the 20th Meeting of the 162 State Parties to the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (SPLOS). He is now a candidate for a judge position in the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) 2017-2026. He was the Indonesian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union and the World Custom Union from September 2010 to January 2015. He also worked with the NATO on maritime security issues. A career diplomat and an expert in international law of the sea, he has served in the Indonesian foreign service for over 25 years since 1986.
